During her career journey, Janelle Monáe has fused into her sound effects from a multitude of genres. In her albums, she has R & B sounds, funk, soul, hip-hop, electro, psychedelic, etc. and she knows how best to integrate everything. You can even hear some reggae infiltrate into her single “Yoga” in 2015. Monáe has now paid tribute to the genre of humankind by covering the “High Tide or Low Tide ” by Bob Marley & The Wailers.
Monáe kept things pretty easy with the way she delivered the song that was released as part of the Spotify Singles series, keeping it in a relatively no jazz reggae style. Just like many of Marley’s production, it is a fascinating and fantastic song, and that’s what it’s all about: it proves Monáe’s ‘chameleon-like’ ability as a musician to blossom in all sorts of musical situations. For the single, she also recorded a new version of Dirty Computer’s song “I Like That.” This time, the song sounds more natural and more influenced by the soul, to distinguish it from the hip-hop version.
